I had a beautiful Lark Sparrow in Highland County on Saturday, at my property
on 640 up above Blue Grass at the Virginia/West Virginia line. I got
fantastic looks at the bird, and saw its distinctive chestnut markings on the
head, the central breast spot, and the white in its tail. Could not find the
bird on Sunday.
Also had at least 4 singing golden-wings. Or at least birds singing
golden-winged songs, some of them may have been hybrids. We had 2 Brewster's
last year, and have had at least one for the last 5 or 6 years. A few years
ago, we had a Lawrence's.
Last weekend, while chasing a golden-winged warbler's song around a
blackberry patch, I walked right up on a black bear. A very large black
bear. I don't know which of us was more surprised, but fortunately after a
few threatening snorts he ran off up the mountain, and I went with trembling
legs back to the house. (The bear was snorting, not me. I was too scared to
do anything.)
If you are going to be in Highland County and want to visit, please email or
call me. Please, no tapes, we have too many visitors for that. Thank you.
And watch for rattlesnakes and bears!
