Today (11/19), I had 12 Lapland Longspur loosely associating with 200 Horned
Lark and 50 Am Pipits along Rt 652 (Guthrie Rd) near Stuart's Draft. This is
the same place where Allen Larner had 3-5 Laplands earlier this week. Guthrie
Rd is reached from I-64 by taking the Rt 608 exit east of Staunton and then
traveling sevaral miles south on 608. Turn right on Guthrie Rd and look for
these birds in the fields particularily where a gravel road cuts out across the
fields. The longspurs are easily picked out of flying flocks by listening for
their distictive rattles and tew or teddle call notes. The Laplands were #326
on my year list.
