This is a follow-up to Sue Heath's report on yesterday's visit to Lake Anna
in search of the reported Pacific Loon.
From Pleasant's Landing (off Road 1030 from Rt. 701) I observed at least
10 Common Loon, 1 Red-necked Grebe and 1 Red-Throated Loon and good numbers
of Horned Grebe. NO Pacific Loon.
I was there from approximately 12:30 - 1:10 p.m.
When I first arrived there were four Common Loon nearby, three of which
stayed within close proximity to each other. One of these three appeared
smaller and seemed to sit lower in the water and plumage more gray. Another
Common appeared to have a "collar" around the neck, more like a
five-o'clock-shadow effect. As time passed, more loons seemed to "appear"
from nowhere. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time to return to office
and could not stay.
