Virginia birders,
I spent 3 hours this morning, Saturday 5 August, at
Lake Albemarle (about 8 mi NW of Charlottesville, off
Old Garth Rd). The noticeably cooler and less humid
weather was most welcome.
The morning's birding highlight was an adult GREAT
EGRET feeding in the shallow water 40 - 60 yards east
of the boat launch. My last Albemarle County Great
Egret was 24 April 05.
Four GREEN HERONS were also present around the lake,
along with a lone GREAT BLUE HERON and 3 WOOD DUCKS.
There was little water going over the spillway, and so
this small piece of Albemarle County shorebird habitat
had no occupants today.

Though I didn't work hard on them today, I identified
several skippers among the butterflies, including
Peck's, Crossline, Fiery, and the ubiquitous
Silver-spotted.
