Howdy all,
Can't say that we have been catching a lot of birds the last few days but it
has been better than it was. We banded 9 birds yesterday and 15 today. We have
seen a small shift into actual migrant birds. Been seeing (through banding) a
lot of fat birds. For example, The Sibley book says that RED-EYED VIREOS
weigh roughly 17 grams (a normal non-migrant weigh) but yesterday we caught a
bird
that weighed 24.4 grams! Do the math in your head, then think about it, and
then you can go WOW!
Caught a few nice birds over the last two days including SUMMER TANAGER,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, VEERY, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, and YELLOW-SHAFTED
FLICKER.
The storms last night really were a disappointment here. Got little rain even
through it sounded good. Just a weird bunch of storms. Can't say it did much
to help us out here, although it is a bit cooler today. I would still love to
see a cold front!
As a note to possible visitors, please come early in the morning!! Although
we are not catching much yet, the few birds we are catching are all coming the
first two netruns of the morning. By 9am it is pretty dead at the station.
Our first net run of the day is 6:30am currently with the second net run at
7:15. We have had quite a few visitors that show up after 10am and it is
already
dead and we have nothing to show them. I feel bad, but I don't control the
birds! Anyway, if you can come, please take that into account.
