Today I birded Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County. Overall the
reservoir was pretty empty. The only loons I found were all Common
Loons, many of which are sporting breeding colors. Horned Grebes were
extremely scarce. I only saw 1. New arrivals were Great Egret and Tree
Swallow at Clyde's Pond in the Dick Cross WMA and Northern Rough-winged
Swallow at North Bend Park. A disturbing trend has been the absence of
Loggerhead Shrikes. I have been birding the reservoir regularly since
9/27/03 and each time I go I visit likely shrike habitat including
Redlawn Rd, Baskerville Rd and Smith Crossroads. I have yet to see a
single shrike and am wondering if there are any left in the area at all.
I will keep looking. Other birds seen today included Pied-billed Grebe,
Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, American Coot, Bald Eagle,
Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, American Kestrel, Northern
Harrier, Wilson's Snipe, Bonaparte's Gull, Belted Kingfisher, Red-headed
Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Ruby-crowned Kinglet,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Pine Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Red-winged
Blackbird, Swamp Sparrow, Field sparrow, Savannah Sparrow and Chipping
Sparrow. Happy Spring and good birding.
