Hello all,
We participated in the annual Reston Summer Bird Count this morning. Reston was
divided into three sectors, and we were part of the Sector Three count team.
For us, the remarkable part of our morning was the nesting and feeding activity
we saw.
This included:
Watching a GREEN HERON break off a stick and carry it into the woods along the
western most pond at what is now the Fannie Mae property.
Female MALLARD with five fuzzy ducklings at Sunrise Valley Park.
Male PILEATED WOODPECKER feeding a good size juvenile at the nest cavity.
EASTERN KINGBIRD sitting on a nest in a Sycamore Tree on the Fannie May
property.
Adult WOOD THRUSH being followed across the forest floor by at least one
juvenile.
Male BALTIMORE ORIOLE in the vicinity of a nest in the same Sycamore Tree with
the Eastern Kingbird nest. We did not see any evidence of the female and the
nest opening was opposite us.
Overall, it was a very successful count with 67 species identified. Since some
of the group were going out after lunch, this might not be the final total.
