Peggy Lyons and I spent five hours at James River State Park today (June
7) working on the VSO State Park Breeding Bird Foray. Although it became
quite hot by early afternoon, the birds remained fairly active and we
recorded 61 species. The biggest surprise was a pair of Willow
Flycatchers (we observed a singing male for more than 30 minutes and
watched as another Willow Flycatcher foraged in the nearby willows).
This is the first documented sighting of the species in Buckingham
County. It is not listed in the recently published (2006) Birds of the
South Central Virginia Piedmont.
