If you plan to bird the CBBT, please note the recently implemented
procedure. In talking with a CBBT officer, they suggested we pass the
word along to fellow birders.
In response to 911 and recent security concerns for the CBBT, individuals
who have obtained their permission letters to bird the islands must
now STOP and go inside the stations located at each end of the CBBT. They
are easily accessible with pull off lane to your right just before you
reach the toll plazas. Pull into the designated parking lot and walk
around to entrance located on "highway side".
You MUST present your permission letter, vehicle registration and driver's
license on each trip, coming and going.
While on our return trip yesterday from Chincoteague, after "registering"
at the north end station, we noted the CBBT officers where pulling off onto
the islands and verifying by checking license plates to their list of
"registered" birders for the day.
If you bird the islands without a permission letter and without registering
you will at minimum be asked to leave the islands.
And please, as a reminder to all of us, if you have a permission letter,
are property registered and are out on the islands birding, DO NOT cross
over the guard rails on Islands 2, 3, and 4!!!!!!.
Thanks and Happy Birding!
