VA Birders,
This afternoon ( April 13) I checked out Huntley Meadows to see what was
new. The front area near the observation tower is almost completely dried up.
It may be a nice mud flat for shorebirds this spring, but then I fear it may
simply turn into a meadow. The only interesting birds I saw here was a
flyby AMERICAN KESTREL. and some NORTHERN ROUGHWING SWALLOWS. The area down
the
informal trail past the tower known as Barnyard Run was much more productive.
I walked all the way down to the second beaver lodge and then beyond. The
best sighting was a pair of CHIMNEY SWIFTS, my first this year. Other birds
of
note were 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, several RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS, and a PALM WARBLER. I also saw a GREAT EGRET and a few GREAT BLUE
HERONS, but no other wading birds.
