Twenty-two people participated in the Huntley Meadows walk sponsored by the
Northern Virginia Bird Club. We had a great time, starting with the
observation of a Brown Thrasher perched near the top of a tree at the
Visitor's Center parking lot followed soon after by the presence of a Barred
Owl. Red-shouldered Hawks were located near the nest. Red-headed
Woodpeckers were close to being ubiquitous, with seven birds congregating
along the path near the entry to the wetland. Hooded Mergansers and Wood
Ducks were in pairs in the wetland while a single hen Ring-necked Duck
preened and seemed unconcerned with her solitude. Half a dozen Northern
Shovelers helped round out the waterfowl numbers. A single Greater
Yellowlegs stopped briefly at the wetland before taking to the air while
vocalizing as it gained altitude. A kingfisher presented nice but brief
views for the assembled birders. Both kinglet species were observed and
Common Yellowthroat, Palm Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler were either
seen or heard.
