Sue Heath and Edith Bradbury joined me for the weekly survey of Huntley
Meadow's Hike-Bike Trail. I was delighted to have their company.
Sue started the survey with a bang, counting a Swainson's Thrush before I even
arrived.
Acadian flycatchers are in, with 3 being tallied. The Eastern Phoebe pair is
still at the maintenance bldg. We also found 7 Great Crested Flycatchers,
including one emerging from the new box placed in the woodcock meadow just for
them. Way to go Charlie and Barbara Chambers!
We tallied 11 warbler species today: N. Parula (3), Magnolia (1), Blk-throated
blue (5), Yellow-rumped (38), Blk-throated Green (1), Pine (1), Black-and-white
(2), Hooded (2), American Redstart (1) singing a weird version of the standard
Cee- cee- cee- o song, Ovenbird (4), and Common Yellowthroat (3).
Chimney Swifts put on a wonderful aerial performance today over the Central
Marsh. A conservative estimate put their numbers at 130.
Other notable migrants and arrivals include scarlet Tanager (7), a female Blue
Grosbeak, a singing male Rose-breasted Grosbeak (sorry, Sue, we got it after
you left), and Indigo Bunting (9).
For the record, it appears that bluebirds are taking to the new boxes quite
nicely. A well-deserved thank you to the Chambers and the Virginia Bluebird
Society for assistance in revitalizing our bluebird trail. The days of high
depredation rates seem to be a thing of the past.
