Hello VAbirders,
One female Ruby-throat cruised through yesterday about noon, pausing to
sample the potted zinnias on the deck. Too bad the hummers are on the wane,
the pineapple sage has bloomed in the last three days. The hummers love it
when their seasons overlap.

Ellen,
Sounds like that Pineapple Sage is just in time for a wintering western
hummer, eh? :-) And BTW, if you don't already grow Salvia guaranitica aka
Anise Sage, give it a try. It starts blooming here in June/July and
continues to frost. Our hummers love it as much as they love the Cardinal
Lobelia. It's a beauty too, very pretty blue.
Speaking of hummers, we've got 2 right now. One is a porker! The little
tank is so fat it's a wonder it can fly. But it does, and even chases the
other hummer who dares to approach the favored feeder and flowers.
Still enjoying hummer fun, and always on the watch for a western hum!
