A friend of mine informed me that any life birds sighted foraging, swimming
or flying over the main stem of the Potomac river that borders WV and VA
are Maryland birds since MD has ownership of the Potomac. He brought this
to my attention since I've sighted a Little Blue Heron (on the WV shore and
flying) over the Potomac near Harper's Ferry and a Great Egret fishing in
the Potomac within the last week. The Little Blue still counts as a WV bird
but I'll have to move the Great Egret to MD.
Just curious as to how you've logged your state life birds seen under these
conditions? The Dyke Marsh outings come to mind as a prime example.
What happens when the tide is out and you have 200 yards of mud flats?
Is this now considered the "extended VA shoreline"?
