Greetings to all:
Following are some sightings in Danville and Halifax Co. for the past few days.

Lapland Longspurs - 5 with good views and with some changing to breeding
plumage.
Horned Larks - 80
Monday March 3, 2003
Leggett's Bottom; Hwy 58 West; Halifax Co.
Large flock of Ring-billed Gulls - 500

Killdeer - 100 plus
American Pipits - 5
Leggett's Farm Pond just about a mile further west
Ross's Geese - 2
Redhead Ducks - 6 (4 males & 2 females) This is a record high count for me in
Halifax Co. as usually on a single Redhead might be in with some Canvasbacks
now and then at Staunton River State Park.
They were seen again on the way home that evening.
Bufflehead - 1
Mallard - 2
Canada Geese - 40
Tuesday March 4, 2003
Leggett's Farm Pond
Redhead Duck - 6
Northern Pintail - 2 (1 male & 1 female)
Bufflehead - 1
The Ross's Geese was a Life Bird and I was able to watch them for about 10
minutes and observed them flying with a few on the Canada Geese. When I first
spotted them they were at the edge of the pond and I could only see the top of
their heads and some of their necks at first and thought that they were gulls
until I got my glasses on them. After a few minutes they moved on out and I
backup the car into a better viewing position and was able to see them. The
first thing that stood out was that the shape of their head was not as large as
a Snow Goose and that it was rounded. The bill was much smaller. After I came
to the conclusion that they were Ross's Geese I wanted to watch them fly and
was soon reward as a flock of Canada's took flight and they joined them at the
last minute and flew across in front of me and landed in another pond. I was
able to pull up to the other side of the road for a much closer view of them
before I had to leave for work.
