On Sunday morning 16 birders from the Monticello Bird Club went to Hog Island
in Surry County. I was asked to fill in for Brenda Tekin as she broke her left
ankle & had surgery on 4/23. Get well soon Brenda; we will miss you & your
knowledge.
The weather cooled down & the winds picked up at Hog Island which seemed to
keep the warblers away. We saw & heard 28 species of birds with the highlights
being a Virginia Rail, a female Harrier hunting and at least 10 Bald Eagles. We
watched an immature BE being harassed by an adult BE. They ended up locking
talons and spiraling towards the ground. They unlocked the talons in time & we
watched the adult BE chasing the immature out of the area.
