Yesterday morning, I went to Hog Island Wildlife Management Area, Fort
Boykin State Park, Chippokes Plantation State Park, and nearby areas on the
south side of the James River in the area of Isle of Wight County and the
town of Surry. All of the parks were closed, and only the Carlisle Tract of
Hog Island was open. I saw a flock of songbirds at the Carlisle Tract,
which included Red-eyed Vireos, White-eyed Vireos, an unknown flycatcher,
and a Magnolia Warbler. Two immature night-herons (I suspect
Yellow-crowned) were at the boat landing. Later, while driving south of
Chippokes Plantation, I saw a Peregrine Falcon soaring with Turkey Vultures
(the entire group was headed south). I was pretty disappointed that all of
the parks were closed (some of the side roads in the area are closed too).
I was glad to see the birds I did.
