Tina Trice and I birded Hog Island WMA in Surry county yesterday. It was
my second visit there this week. The shorebird numbers have increased with
essentially the same species present. The only new shorebirds seen
yesterday that weren't seen last Wednesday were newly arrived SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS. Many of the shorebirds can be studied at close range and with a
scope, it is a good opportunity to study the differences between WESTERN,
LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. We walked some of the back trails and
came across other little pockets of shorebirds, terns and some ducks.
OSPREY seem to be all over and there are quite a few BALD EAGLES giving
great looks. Numbers of GREAT EGRETS are high but no other egret species
could be found. GREAT BLUE HERONS are also abundant and the only heron
species seen. I've listed some other species seen below. Good birding.
