Hello all
Yesterday Jan. 2nd Pat & I took off to Highland & Bath County to get our bird
list for 2005 a good jump start . High lights in Highland were Golden Eagle
near Snowy Mt. a dark phase Rough -- legged Hawk on Rt. 640 . Total miss was
Bald Eagle , Horned Lark , Pine Siskin , Evening Grosbeak , & Crossbills . We
checked out the feeders & fields for birds but they were just not around . We
finally hit the jackpot over in Bath County & here is what we saw . All was
seen at Lake Moomaw .
Canada Goose -- 148 -- no Cackling were to be found
Tundra Swan -- 1 -- Rick I have records for this species Jan . 2000 -- 4 birds
& a spring record for March of 1991 with 4 birds
Gadwall -- 17
Black Duck --37
Mallard -- 196
Redhead -- 2
Ring - necked Duck -- 45
Bufflehead -- 7
Hooded Merganser -- 51
Red -- throated Loon -- 2
Common Loon -- 4
Pied -- billed Grebe -- 3
Am . Coot -- 5
Ring -- billed Gull -- 37
On our way back home we drove thru the Swoope area of Augusta County & here we
got 1 Sharp -- shinned Hawk , Screech Owl & a Short -- eared Owl on the dirt
road of Rt. 707.
Today after work I checked out Bells Lane & there I relocated the 3
Richardson's Cackling Geese among the hundreds of Canada's , 15 Gadwall , 1
Ruddy Duck , & 6 Coot . All & all not a bad 2 days .
