I birded part of Great Falls NP today before work. It
was fun. Migrants were concentrated in the picnic
area and near the little field near the Carriage and
Matildaville trails. At least 16 species of warbler
were present including a few CANADAS. I saw or heard
15 of the 16; two birders reported hearing a Kentucky
but I missed it on both passes.
I watched a BARRED OWL from very close range. It
carried and then ate a Bullfrog on a fallen tree
before flying to join it's mate (or full grown
young??) whereby they performed an act that looked
like "kissing." The owl called frequently but it was
a call that I haven't heard from this species, sort of
whiny and raspy, sped up at the end. It was cool to
watch such a tame bird. One time it even glided over
my head as it went from one perch to another.
The owl coughed up a big pellet but I couldn't find
the pellet after searching for it later.
Other forest birds were nearby but did not mob the
owls.
