Following is the count from Sunday's weekly bird walk at Great Falls
National Park, which identified 36 species and included 10 participants. The
early morning rain rapidly gave way to a sunny day and nice sightings,
including: a lengthy look at a barred owl alongside the trail; the
incandescence of several flickers and a red-bellied woodpecker feasting
together on poison ivy berries in perfect sunlight; and a resident great blue
heron -- unfazed by observers -- hunting in close proximity and enjoying a
light brunch of fish.
The walk meets at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, rain or shine, in front of the
snack bar/concession stand of the Great Falls Park visitors' center; it does
not take place, though, during electrical storms, heavy snows, or when the
trails are icy. All birders are welcome!
