Photo of Shrike found by Greg and Diane and sent via Gabriel to Ned
Brinkley seems to indicate the bird *may be *a Northern Shrike. This could
be a really neat and relatively rare bird for the Valley. Everyone needs to
be especially careful not to go on the property of the person on the South
side of Wolfe Ridge road. I was given permission to bird his property but
only after a very confrontational interaction. The owner has had some
issues with trespassers recently and he was adamant that no one step foot
on his land. If you are able to talk with him you may be able to get
access: otherwise stay on the road. BTW I think it's more likely you will
see the bird from the road. To date there appears to be 4 sightings of
the bird three o of which were from the road looking North. Also be sure
to note precisely which county the bird is seen in as the territory of the
bird likely includes both Rockingham and Augusta. The identification is
still very much up in the air though leaning Northern and photos of the
bird from multiple angles will probably be needed to really nail down the
id.
Location of bird is Emmanuel Church Road and Wolfe Ridge road West of
Bridgewater Rockingham county.
