roost on the Pamunkey River that I had been seeing on Doppler Radar for the
past two years. This site probably has been there a lot longer than that but
that's the period of time I've been looking at it. This site is accessible by
boat only and because the return trip to the landing on the Mattaponi River is
at night and crab pots are all over the place in the Mattaponi and the
Pamunkey up to the bridge by the paper plant and the fact it is a 7-8 mile
trip
access to this site is considered poor. That being said it is a pretty trip,
there is little traffic on this river and you get to see beautiful sites on
the
way and a lot of birds. There are several different species of birds at the
site including red winged black birds and of course purple martins. We had
hundreds of purple martins fly by within a few feet of the boat almost like
they were checking us out. I am not much at counting birds in large numbers
such
as is at this site but it does appear to be much larger than the roost in
Richmond. To put directions in this post would be time consuming and take up a
lot of space. If you have Goggle Earth I can show you where the site is or I
can give directions over the phone. This roost like the one in Richmond is
active from mid July to early September. I believe the peak has passed or will
very shortly but there still should be a lot of birds around for the next two
to three weeks. There is a ramp about halfway to the site and I'm told it is
owned by Howard Brothers Construction. If anyone can get access to this ramp
it would cut travel time in half. My name is Jimmy Fitzgerald and my phone #
is 804 966 5866
