Fifteen people attended the weekly walk at Dyke Marsh in Alexandria this
morning The walk is sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh, meets at 8am in
Belle Haven picnic area, and is open to all. Things started our relatively
slowly, with few waterfowl, but a fly-over peregrine livened things up. Things
picked up as we walked around the marina and down the trail. We ran into a
very nice mixed flock at the edge of the picnic area, containing both kinglets,
yellow-rumped warblers, chickadees and titmice. A phoebe was found nearby.
Near the entrance to the Dyke Marsh trail a winter wren posed at eye level,
giving nice looks. Along the trail we watched a pair of bald eagles cavorting
in the sky and working on a nest in a tall tulip tree near the trail. The pair
posed beautifully on a snag, providing a perfect photo op. We also saw a fox
sparrow feeding in the trail, and later heard one singing. In the gut past the
dogleg we watched three horned grebes, a bufflehead, and a female lesser scaup.
At the platform we again got great looks at a winter wren, as well as several
swamp sparrows. The complete list is below.
