Thirty birders came out for an excellent morning of birding. It was a
Northern Virginia Bird Club walk led by Phil Silas and me. Conditions were
somewhat overcast for most of the morning, but we still managed to tally 67
bird species including thirteen kinds of warblers. We explored the battery
area near the picnic grounds and the trails up the hill from there. We also
checked out the Brushy Point area and walked up to the railroad trestle. Of
the warblers, we had especially nice looks at the Yellow, Prothonotary,
Black and White, many Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Blue and a Northern
Parula. The others usually offered only quick looks or were heard only. We
did see both orioles, Scarlet Tanagers, Great-crested Flycatchers, both
commonly seen Terns, and a Blue Grosbeak. Various butterflies and a Black
Rat Snake and Northern Watersnake were also spotted.
