This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, Sept 6, at 6 p.m.
Top birds this week are MISSISSIPPI KITE in VA, RUFF in MD, and
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in VA.
Other birds of interest include NORTHERN PINTAIL, LEAST BITTERN,
OSPREY, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, SORA, shorebirds including
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, PIPING PLOVER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, MARBLED
GODWIT, WHITE-RUMPED, BAIRD'S, and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE; SANDWICH and BLACK TERNS; COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
CHIMNEY SWIFT, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-BELLIED and other
flycatchers, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and BREWSTER'S
and other warblers.
A single MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over the Waynewood subdivision in
southeastern Fairfax Co, VA, in mid-afternoon September 5; it was
soaring fast in a straight line from east to west.
A RUFF led the parade of shorebirds at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore
Co, on Sept 3, a day with a record 103 species. Among 21 species of
shorebirds were AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and WHITE-RUMPED, BAIRD'S, and
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS. Also on hand were a LEAST BITTERN and a
SORA.
An adult LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was found Sept 6 at Sky Meadows SP,
Fauquier Co, VA. It flew from a locust tree along the driveway
southeast of Mt. Bleak House to the paddock fence; from there it
hawked for insects for several minutes before disappearing over the
knoll.
NORTHERN PINTAILS arrived in the area, with 4 reported from Hunting
Creek, Fairfax Co, on Sept 1.
Area hawk watches are up and running. Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co,
VA, kicked off its 90-day season with 58 OSPREYS on Sept 1. On Sept 4,
they observed a record-early GOLDEN EAGLE. Snickers Gap, on the
Clarke/Loudon, VA county line, tallied 11 BALD EAGLES Sept 1.
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER continued to be
seen, off and on, at the Patton Turf Farm on River Rd, south of
White's Ferry, Montgomery Co, MD, with the most recent reports from
Sept 4 and 5. Similarly, 1 or 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have
occasionally been spotted at the polo grounds on Hughes Road,
Montgomery Co, with reports through Sept 1.
On Aug 31, 5 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 3 or 4 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS were among 6 species of shorebird at the Central Sod Farm
on John Brown Rd, Queen Anne's Co, MD. A flock of 13 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS paid a brief visit to the sod farm Sept 5.
Five AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and an UPLAND SANDPIPER were found Sept 3
on Grassdale Rd, south of Remington in southwestern Fauquier Co. A
flock of 18 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS was found that day on the Culpeper
side of the turf farm.
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were among 14
species of shorebird at Hog Island, Surry Co, VA, Sept 2.
On Sept 3, Poplar Island in the Chesapeake Bay, Talbot Co, MD, hosted
22 species of shorebird, including AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, and WILSON'S and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
Seven PIPING PLOVERS were seen Sept 3 at Cape Henlopen, near the
lighthouse point.
In Howard Co, MD, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found at the new
ballfields at Western RP Aug 31.
On Sept 4, Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, hosted 7 shorebird species, as did
the flats at Brown's Bridge on the Howard/Montgomery Co line.
A WHIMBREL was seen Aug 30 at Great Oak Pond, Kent Co, MD. On Sept 4,
the pond held 8 species of shorebird, including a juvenile RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE.
On Sept 3, the ORV zone of Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD,
featured a MARBLED GODWIT as well as SANDWICH and BLACK TERNS.
The BAIRD'S SANDPIPER foraging in the potato field south of Bombay
Hook NWR, DE, at the intersection of Rte 9 and Edgewater Farm Rd, was
still present Sept 1.
The BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at the pond on Williams Rd, Cecil Co, MD, was
still present Sept 1.
The WWTP in Hurlock, Dorchester Co, MD, held a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, and a BLACK TERN, on August 28.
A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen Sept 1 at the Paper Mill flats,
Baltimore Co, MD.
A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE reported Sept 3 from Bombay Hook, at the north
end of Bear Swamp, was seen again Sept 4, along with 2 BLACK TERNS.
On Sept 1, 6 BLACK TERNS were feeding on floating grasses at the mouth
of Furnace Bay from Perryville Community Park, Cecil Co.
In Montgomery Co, 2 BLACK TERNS were spotted Aug 30 at Black Hill RP,
while on Aug 31, some 34 BLACK TERNS passed along the Potomac River at
Seneca.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were noted over Howard University, NW DC, on Sept 4,
and at Tyson's Corner, Fairfax Co, on Sept 1 and 5.
CHIMNEY SWIFTS--100 or more--put on a good show over Luther Jackson MS
in Fairfax Co Sept 5.
Some 8 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were seen at Turkey Point, Cecil Co,
Sept 5.
OLIVE-SIDED and YELLOW-BELLIED were two of 6 FLYCATCHER species
spotted Sept 5 in the NY Monuments area of Manassas National
Battlefield Park, Prince William Co, VA--along with 2 PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS. Then there were the WARBLERS: some 16 species. NY Monuments
was also full of migrants on Sept 3.
A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was discovered Sept 3, and found again
Sept 5, in the Willow Grove Farm area of Cromwell Valley Park,
Baltimore Co. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was spotted Sept 5 at the
Granite Area of Patapsco Valley SP, also in Baltimore Co.
Turkey Point enjoyed some fine days this week, with report of 3
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS plus 15 species of WARBLER on Sept 3 and 1
PHILADELPHIA VIREO and 16 species of warbler on Sept 4. PHILADELPHIA
VIREO was also seen at Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, Sept 4, and
Fort C F Smith Park, Arlington Co, VA, Sept 5.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were reported from an assortment of locations,
including Piney Run Park, Carroll Co, MD, Sept 2; Meadowside Park,
Montgomery Co, Sept 3; Turkey Point Sept 5; the Granite area and Black
Walnut Point, Talbot Co, Sept 6.
A BREWSTER'S WARBLER was found in Rock Creek Park, NW DC, Sept 1. It
was behind the Maintenance Yard, along the ravine. A GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLER was banded at Kiptopeke Sept 5.
Riverbend Park in Fairfax Co continued to draw migrant warblers, with
9 species Sept 3 and 12--including 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS--on Sept 4.
Other rewarding warbler-watching sites included Fort Bayard Park in
the District; Meadowside in Montgomery Co, Granite and Lake Roland in
Baltimore Co, and Rockburn Park in Howard Co; Long Branch Nature
Center, Arlington; Isaac Crossman Park along Four Mile Run in Falls
Church; and the Blue Ridge Center, northwestern Loudoun Co, VA.
