VA Birders,
The Sharp-shinned was back just after dawn this morning. It caught a small bird
near the feeders. I'm unsure as to which species, then shortly headed for the
woods.
A Pine Siskin was using the bird bath this morning about 10 seconds before the
Sharp-shinned did his thing. I took a few steps across the room to get my
binos. By the time I got back to the window all of the birds were gone, except
the one on the ground under the talons of the Sharpie. The Sharpie then took
off with his breakfast.
A Fox Sparrow was feeding this morning with the other birds under the feeder.
This evening just before dusk a second Fox Sparrow came in.
Later in the day I went for a hike on a deserted road in the area. I found 2
Red-tailed Hawks, one of which flew up from just under the road only a few feet
from me. The raptor had been feeding on a deer carcass. Not far from that spot
3 Golden-crowned Kinglets fed in the tree tops.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
