VA Birders,
Rob Hilton, Roger "Andy" Anderson, and a man named Jerry joined me at
Fort C.F. Smith Park, Arlington, this morning. Thanks especially to Rob, who
spotted 3 Caspian Terns flying by the parking lot. They were my first in
Arlington this year, and one of only a handful of records for the park. We had
5
species of warblers there today: a pair of Common Yellowthroats, an immature
Am.
Redstart, and a fall Magnolia Warbler which were seen off and on around the
Bird Stream during the morning. Then about noon, after the others had left, a
Canada Warbler checked out the stream but didn't stay long, and then a fall
Chestnut-sided Warbler came and splashed and bathed in the stream for at least
a
couple of minutes. Other highlights included a Scarlet Tanager (probably a
female because her wings weren't very dark) and a Baltimore Oriole. In
addition, 2 Ospreys and a Bald Eagle flew over the park.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
