Hello VA-Birders,
I was at Fort CF Smith Park in Arlington at sunrise this AM looking for
migrants. It took a while for actual sun to appear due to clouds, but when it
did, I found my first Virginia yellow PALM WARBLER of the season, as well as my
first VA COMMON YELLOWTHROAT singing from the field behind the main house. The
Palm Warbler dropped out of the sky, chipped a few times as it foraged in a
tree for perhaps 20 seconds, hopped to a nearby tree, and flew away over the
trees and out of sight. I guess pickings were slim!
Also present was an EASTERN PHOEBE, BLUE-GREY GNATCATCHER (in the pines) and
3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. CHIPPING SPARROWS are back at the park as well. 39
species, and the list follows (including fly-over birds).
