Howdy all,
Today turned out better than I had expected. At sunrise, there really was not
that many birds around, at least when compared to yesterday morning. But
there were birds and they were there most of the morning. We ended up banding a
very respectable 49 birds today.
We did have some good birds today as well. We heard and then saw both
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO today, both new to our little
area
for the season. We also saw our first BLACKPOLL of the season as well. A bit
of a surprise was the SEDGE WREN that was singing from the marsh area near the
banding station.
As far as banding, we ended up banding 9 different warbler species, if you
include the YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.
I forgot to mention yesterday that we saw our first SPOTTED SANDPIPER and
COMMON TERN when we were checking Prothonotary Warbler nest boxes in the
afternoon.
Here are the totals for 5/4:
Prairie Warbler 1
Northern Parula 1
Common Yellowthroat 6
Yellow-rumped Warbler 2
Black-and-white Warbler 2
Hooded Warbler 1
Northern Waterthrush 1
Ovenbird 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1 first of the season
Indigo Bunting 1
Swamp Sparrow 3
White-throated Sparrow 7
Eastern Towhee 1
Wood Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 20
TOTAL -------------------------- 49
Not really sure what tomorrow is going to hold. It was a gorgeous day today.
Sure wish that would stay the same!
Also forgot to mention yesterday that we found a pink LADIES SLIPPER
blooming! What a weird but beautiful flower!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
