VA BIRDers,
Warmth and humidity met the 12+ participants for the regular (every 2nd Sat.)
monthly bird walk at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in central Loudoun
County August 13, starting at 8:00 am at the Visitor Center/Manor House. This
field trip was sponsored by the Friends of Banshee Reeks and the Loudoun
Wildlife Conservancy and lead by Joe Coleman. Before the field trip started, a
few of us visited the adjacent Dulles Wetlands Mitigation Bank for which
permission was obtained beforehand. Top birds at Banshee were Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher and Blackburnian Warbler; also much YB Cuckoo vocalization and some
were flying about. At Dulles Wetlands, a mix of shorebirds was noted including
Pectoral Sandpiper, American Black Duck was part of the waterfowl crowd and
many Green Herons (old and Young) were tallied. Overall the bird activity for
the day was quite surprising given the heat and humidity ? pockets of locals
and migrants were encountered which was quite pleasant. The list follows (OK
Rog?); the first entry is for Dulles Wetlands.
Special Thanks to Joe Coleman for making arrangements and leading these trips!
