Six people joined me for the weekly Friends of Dyke Marsh bird walk this
morning, Sunday 5 Feburary 2005. The birds may have been staying in the
shelter of the shrubs and tangles; it was fairly quiet and the cool
conditions (overcast skies and SSW wind) did not seem to be promoting
much activity along the Haul Rd.
VA: Fairfax Co: Belle Haven Picnic Grounds and Dyke Marsh.
28 March 2004: 0800 to 1100 EST.
From the shore of picnic grounds, we scoped the Potomac and the bay off
the mouth Hunting Creek. Affter checking the marina, we slowly
progressed down the Haul Road and out the new boardwalk to the terminal
platform; returned more rapidly back up the Haul Road.
3 to 7 C; overcast, changing to mostly cloudy after 1015; 15-20 km/hr
SSW; low tide was circa 0740, but the water was relatively high: the
flats off the mouth of Hunting Creek were largely submerged, the water
was part way up the rip rap along the shore of the picnic grounds, and
the water was well up into the marsh vegetation along the Haul Road;
recent tides and high waters had carried a good deal of dead vegetation
and trash up onto the last section of pathway before the boardwalk;
