Top birds this week are *PACIFIC LOON in VA, *AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN
in VA, *FRANKLIN'S GULL in VA, *WHITE-WINGED DOVE in VA, and *EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE in MD.
Other birds of interest include CACKLING GOOSE, ducks, GREAT WHITE
HERON, GOLDEN EAGLE, RED KNOT, gulls including ICELAND, RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, sparrows, RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS, PURPLE FINCH, PINE SISKIN, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
A *PACIFIC LOON was briefly seen twice on Nov 22 on Lafayette River in
Norfolk, VA during a storm.
An *AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was found Nov 25 in the Accotink Bay
Wildlife Refuge, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax Co, VA and was seen again
several times on the 26th and 27th.
A first winter *FRANKLIN'S GULL was found in a large flock of gulls in
Dorey Park in eastern Henrico Co, VA on Nov 22. An adult *FRANKLIN'S
GULL was seen Nov 25 at the Prince William County landfill along with
two juvenile ICELAND GULLS and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
A *WHITE-WINGED DOVE in the company of a dozen Mourning Doves, was
seen and well-photographed at a feeder on Nov 24 in Norfolk, VA.
The pair of *EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES previously discovered in
Dorchester Co, MD were found again on Nov 24 and Nov 26 at 2363 Hooper
Island Rd at the southern end of the community on Upper Hooper Island.
A CACKLING GOOSE was reported from the terminus (past the 184 mile
marker) of the C&O Canal National Historical Park at Cumberland,
Alleghany Co, MD on Nov. 24 and Nov 26. Another CACKLING GOOSE was
seen in a pond near Nokesville, Prince William Co, VA, on Nov 25.
Waterfowl numbers continued to grow in the area with a LONG-TAILED
DUCK on Little Seneca Lake on Nov 23 and a SURF SCOTER on the lake at
the Black Hills Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 26. Among the
waterfowl at Belmont Bay in Fairfax Co on Nov 24 were an estimated
11,000 LESSER SCAUP.
GREAT WHITE HERONS continue to be found in MD and VA last week with
one report off of Port Republic's Governor Run Rd in Calvert Co, MD on
Nov 21 and another still visiting Fishers Hill on Nov. 27, west of
Strasburg in Shenandoah Co, VA.
There were several reports of GOLDEN EAGLES last week with two, an
adult and a juvenile, at Dan's Rock overlook in Alleghany Co, MD on
the 22nd, and another the same day flying over I-68 in Garrett Co, MD
a few miles from Alleghany Co. One flew almost overhead at Sky
Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA on Nov 25. A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen near
the end of the Wildlife Drive at the Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD
on Nov 26. A juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted Nov 26 in the picnic
area of the Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD.
Three RED KNOTS were found Nov 26 during a visit to Assateague Island,
Worcester Co, MD.
A first year ICELAND GULL and a first year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
were seen at the Prince William County landfill on Nov 24. A dozen
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at the Julie Metz Wetlands in Prince
William Co, VA on Nov 23. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported from
a couple of other locations as well, including a dairy farm near
Gambrills in Anne Arundel Co, MD on Nov 23, one at the Bladensburg
Marina, Prince George's Co, MD on Nov. 24, and still another at Dyke
Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Nov 26.
Three RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery
Co, MD on Nov 22 and on Nov 26. On Nov 25 a group of birders had a
seven-woodpecker day at Sky Meadows SP that included several of the
park's signature RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS.
Also seen at Sky Meadows SP on Nov 25 was a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. It was
on the fence line near the small ponds east of Rte 17.
On Nov 21, for the 7th year out of 8, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER showed
up at a feeder in Norfolk, VA.
Two AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS along with a LINCOLN'S SPARROW were among
several sparrow species spotted at Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery
Co on Nov 26. TREE SPARROWS were reported in small numbers from a
couple of other locations as well including Greenbury Point in Anne
Arundel Co, MD on Nov 26. Three FOX SPARROWS were seen and heard at
Dyke Marsh on Nov 26 while at least a dozen vocal and well-seen FOX
SPARROWS were found Nov 27 at the Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co,
VA.
Because of their dramatic decline over the past couple decades it is
always a pleasure to find RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, especially in flocks like
the 20 found at Lake Matoaka in the Williamsburg area on Nov 22. There
were also a few at the Julie Metz Wetlands on Nov. 23.
PURPLE FINCHES continued to be reported in small numbers with one in a
yard in Baltimore and another at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on
Nov 22.
On Nov. 24 two PINE SISKINS were feeding in conifers adjacent to the
exercise area for horses at Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC.
An EVENING GROSBEAK was found Nov 22 across from the dam at Piney
Reservoir, Garrett Co, MD.
