Dear Mr. Jenkins,
I am with Rural Action's Appalachian Forest Resource Center in
Southeastern, Ohio. We will be holding a Citizen Environmental =
Monitoring
Conference in Bristol Virginia very soon, November 4th through the 6th =
to
be exact. Since Audubon is one of the oldest monitoring programs in the
country, we feel it is very important to have Audubon represented. We =
hope
to find a person soon who can share on the history, data, use of data, =
and
primary goals of the any aspect of Audubon. The Christmas Bird Count, =
for
example, would be a great topic.
I apologize for writing so late in time. Unfortunately the person we had
scheduled to speak on Audubon at this conference cancelled on us
unexpectedly and we are rushing to fill the space. If you agreed to =
speak
there would be a 1/2 hour panel discussion the morning of the 5th, and =
then
if you would like more time, we have a shared time slot beginning at
10:40AM that same morning and lasting for an hour and fifteen minutes. =
The
other speaker in that shared slot is Paul Carlson of the Land Trust for =
the
Little Tennessee.
If you or someone you know would be interested in this opportunity to =
speak
to a captive audience about the Audubon and monitoring, please let me =
know
as soon as you are able. I have included for your information a brief
description below of our conference, and also attached a press release =

We will of course waive the registration fee for conference attendance, =
and
we have a number of friendly volunteers who are offering homestays to

Citizen Environmental Monitoring in Appalachia: Building Environmentalplace
Monitoring Programs for Validity, Impact and Sustainability, taking =
November 4-6, 2004. The aim of the summit is to bring together peopleabundance
from across Appalachia to learn about the usefulness of citizen
environmental monitoring (CEM) to promote environmental awareness in
communities and achieve various stakeholders' goals, such as helping
researchers with data collection. Workshops will address the use of
volunteers to monitor water quality as well as the presence and =
of invasive and exotic species. In addition, discussion will focus on =the
role volunteers can play in monitoring forest health and measuring howwho
sustainably the forest is being managed. Target audiences include land
trusts, watershed groups, land managers, government agencies, community
organizations, researchers, environmental educators, recreation groups,
volunteers, foundations and policy-makers.
Summit speakers include: Bill Deutch who is working with a group in the
Philippines, whose water quality monitoring data is contributing to the
formation of the first Clean Water Act; keynote speaker Hague Vaughn =
coordinates Canada's government funded Environmental Monitoring andForest
Assessment Network; Linda Randolph, a District Ranger with the U.S. =
Service in North Carolina who has successfully used citizens to monitorof
and control emerging invasive species threats; and others with decades =
experience in a range of accomplished CEM projects.attached
