I spent most of the day at Mason Neck both the State Park and the NWR.
This is part of an on-going project to learn about avian usage of the park
and refuge throughout the year. I started off near dawn tallying the flight
in the big grassy field area of the State Park until 0900 and then moved
throughout the refuge tallying birds at various stops (20 stops in all). I
started a bit before 0700 and ended near 1500, less about an hour for lunch
and chit-chat with management. Top bird of the day was a Chuck-wills-widow
that called near dawn a few times. The next interesting species was a small
group of Black Terns off the Great Marsh - not much else was found that
would be termed unusual. Good group of warblers including several Cape
Mays. I include a Great Egret sighting reported by a canoeist on Kanes
Creek for completeness since I did not visit that location (not enough time
for one observer) and failed to find that species elsewhere. I include
everything found today in the list below o give the reader a rough idea of
relative abundance at this time of the year on the Mason Neck peninsula; the
list totals 86 species.
