A stop yesterday morning produced a good number of waterfowl at the
private pond along County Road 666 off Rt 221:
Canada Goose 250
Mallard 11
Ring-necked Duck 80
Hooded Merganser 4
Gadwall 8
Green-winged Teal 4
Great Blue Heron 1
I did not find the White-crowned Sparrows on this trip, but here are a
few other numbers from along the road:
Red-tailed Hawk 1
Cedar Waxwing 6
Eastern Bluebird 13
RC Kinglet 1
YR Warbler 30
House Finch 10
Purple Finch 10
Also, on the morning of January 1st a flock of about 2500 Common
Grackles flew over our neighborhood in Lynchburg. Grackles are usually
scarce during the winter around this area, with numbers usually under 20
on our annual winter bird count, although I believe Rexanne Bruno saw a
flock of about 250 in late December. This flock was apparently passing
through.
