[Va-bird] Eastern Shore Wrap-up

Hello VA-Birders,
It was a fun weekend in Accomack County, as the birds were good (some
great!) and the weather was good, at least until today! I was at
Chincoteague NWR by 5:30 this morning, but there was only rain and little
wind. I was able to see the fenced-in PIPING PLOVER nest area very close to
the road at the south end of the beach parking area, complete with bird.
Noting nothing interesting, I decided to visit the causeway since it was low
tide. Birds new for the trip there were two BLACK-NECKED STILTS close to
the road, and a lone WHIMBREL poking its striped head out of the grasses. I
also observed a drake RED-BREASTED MERGANSER swimming just off Queen Sound
landing.
From here I visited a few of the roads just south of the refuge in the
general area of Wallops Island, including Wallops Island Rd, Taylor Farm Rd
(marked only as 781), Wisharts Point Rd, and Flat Rock Road. It ended up
being some nice county listing work, picking up a couple of new ones
including GRASSHOPPER SPARROW (several) and 3 HORNED LARKS.
After picking up the family, we went back to the refuge and we definately
noticed the winds picked up significantly. I really felt like some good
birds would be blown in, but there was really nothing to speak of. I had a
fly-by COMMON LOON, several GANNETS, and a BLACK TERN. We later observed a
single breeding-plumage RED KNOT sitting in the mudflat just off the north
end parking area, my closest views of a perched bird ever and a real
stunner!
In all, a very nice weekend of sun and birds. Below is the list of 121
species observed Friday morning through this afternoon in the county,
including Saxis Marsh, Wallops Island area roads, and Chincoteague and
various points in between.
