did a quick pre deep freeze trip to Dyke Marsh earlier today. It was 50 degrees
with meltage outside my Belle View Condo, but a little wind blowing across the
ice on the Potomac made it feel a bit cooler.
A few birders, including by good buddy, Dave Boltz, were watching the Eared
Grebe when I got there. It was out from the boat ramp and moving north...and it
looks like I have to edit my list to include it...
I then went down Haul Road to get out of the wind, but the wind was there as
well and kept small bird activity to a minimum. Found one group of sparrows
foraging trailside in a sunny spot, but twas only Song, Swamp and
WhiteThroateds. Did manage to "re"find one FIELD SPARROW as well.
"Pleasant Surprise" bird of the day was 11 TUNDRA SWANS at the mouth of the
little gut. An unusual visitor to the Dyke Marsh environs. Otherwise, a good
selection of waterfowl as seen on list below...
