It took me almost 30 minutes at 2 p.m. today (1/27) to find the Eared Grebe
that has been hanging around the Belle Haven marina in Fairfax County. It had
moved farther away from the shore than it had been (apparently) when other
birders saw it earlier in the day. I found it dozing with two Ruddy Ducks, too
far away for photography. The birds were sleeping with their heads tucked in,
so it took a while before I got to see the pointy head, dark face and red eye
of the grebe. Other nice birds in the vicinity were at least 70 Canvasback and
about 25 Scaup, many of them Greater. Common Mergansers, most of them females,
were also very much in evidence. The extent of ice in the Potomac is truly
impressive, and doubtless will be more so after another 24 hours of
sub-freezing temps.
