VA BIRDers,
I report here the results of the regular Friends of Dyke Marsh Field Trip lead
by Roger Miller Sunday, 6/6 combined with the results of one of the Breeding
Bird Survey legs I did(the Hike-Bike Trail) that Larry Cartwright coordinates
at Dyke (for the last 8 years or so; contact Larry for questions or to
volunteer at prowarbler@xxxxxxxxx). Afterwards I report on the canoe leg of
the BBS survey that Chip Johnston and I did early this morning, 6/8.
The Field Trip was well attended with about 10 people present. Several good
highlights were found: three Great Egrets, a male Bufflehead in Hunting Creek
Bay (a rare June record in these parts; present for over 2 weeks now), a pair
of Lesser Scaup in Hunting Creek Bay, HY Red-tailed Hawk flying over the marsh
edge, Spotted Sandpiper, Ruby-throated Hummingbird on nest, Warbling Vireos,
Marsh Wrens, American Redstart (not a known breeder!) and fine looks at
Baltimore Orioles. The Hike-Bike Trail added a sedately perched YB Cuckoo,
several Acadian Flycatchers, a couple of Prothonotary Warblers close to the
trail, and an unusual (for location and date) E. Towhee.
This morning's canoe outing took place about an hour before low tide and
yielded up 4 male Least Bitterns, a Green Heron and Black-crowned Night-Heron
flying over, an adult Bald Eagle causing nearby Osprey great consternation, 5
Marsh Wrens, a Brown Thrasher in a wet forest edge, and another Prothonotary
territory.
Below is the combined totals found Sunday to help give the reader a picture of
the diversity and relative abundance at Dyke Marsh.
