VA BIRDers,
Warm weather met the participants for the Friends of Dyke Marsh Field Trip,
open to all. Brilliant blue skies and warming breezes met the group as we
watched young Bald Eagles play "catch" with a bit of fish. Nearby 3 Lesser
Scaup fed in Hunting Creek Bay. We had a fine raptor showing which began
with a male Northern Harrier flying over Jones Point and heading south down
the Potomac and ending with a Sharp-shinned Hawk hunting the marsh edges
near the trail We were pleased to find a Tree Swallow flycatching over the
forest near the marina as well as 2 Gray Catbirds along Haul Road. And
along the dogleg we found a few White-crowned Sparrows including one still
singing with a nearby male Common Yellowthroat. All in all a fine day to be
birding - the list is provided below.
