On the Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Dyke Marsh this morning, 10
birders bundled up against the cold wind but many birds stayed hunkered
down. We found 37 species, including a large number of Common Mergansers on
the river and in the bay near the marina, with close views of a pair in
excellent light. The Bald Eagle nest along the Haul Road had an adult that
may be brooding young. Some of us watched the adult settle down gently from
a standing posture.
An Osprey was seen, perhaps first of season at Dyke Marsh (?). And there
was an unusual number of kinglets, with 5 Golden-crowned and 4 Ruby-crowned.
Grebes also put in a good appearance, with 5 Horned and 3 Pied-billed.
Northern Virginia Bird Club walks are open to all, and are listed in the
Siskin newsletter at http://nvabc.org/the-siskin/ ;
