A sizable group of birders came out this morning to enjoy a beautiful and
interesting morning of birding. It was the Friends of Dyke Marsh sponsored
Sunday morning Dyke Marsh walk held every Sunday morning at 8:00 AM which is
free and open to all. Our group had nice diversity in terms of age and birding
experience and was fun showing birds to people whicb they had not seen before,
Some highlights included active Bald Eagles and Ospreys throughout the morning.
One pair of Bald Eagles perched closely together not too far from the deck at
the end of the boardwalk. The female kept vocalizing loudly right in the ear of
the male. We can only imagine what she was complaining about. We also spotted
four species of swallows including a pair of Purple Martins flying over the
picnic area and a Barn Swallow at the end of the boardwalk. Grebes were
agreeable as both species swam close for good views. Also, a Red-tailed Hawk
flew in and landed just over our heads and then took off with a Blue Jay in
pursuit. A Brown Creeper, Winter Wren and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker put in
appearances and represented wintering birds well.
