The dozen or so participants at Dyke Marsh on Sunday morning were treated to
a 62 species day....A YB Cuckoo was heard in the picnic area and a BB Cuckoo
was seen on the peninsula by Mike Iwanik prior to the groups arrival. We were
treated to a sweet display of Cedar Waxwings handing (billing?) locust
blossoms back and forth. The eight warbler species we saw or heard were N.
Parula, Yellow, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumps, Blackpoll, B&W
and Common Yellowthroat. A push of thrushes (sounds like a good title for a
movie) resulted in two unusual sightings, a Swainsons in the picnic area
and a Veery along the trail. The orioles are back in good numbers w/ Orchards
nesting in the picnic area already. Kingbirds were also busy w. nest
construction in the picnic area. Warbling vireos abound with as many as 6
seen or heard. My first E. Wood Pewee sounded off halfway down the Haul Rd.
Acadians are present also. Marsh Wrens are back and the peninsula proved to
be hawk friendly today - views of a male Harrier (moving south) being chased
by crows, a circling RT Hawk and one quick view of a probable Coopers on the
island helped fill out the list for today...
BTW - the Dyke Marsh Breeding Bird Survey starts Memorial Day Weekend and
runs thru July 4th (officially). Join the fun, get your name in the
newsletter. No experience needed, we'll team you up w/ veterans of the Marsh.
