VA Birders,
I thought it was a good sign that the quacking of Mallards greeted me
as I got out of the car at Riverside Park this morning. I anticipated
that a few people would have missed my post of yesterday and would show
up for the Ducks on the Potomac walk sponsored by the Northern Virginia
Bird Club. Three members of the club did arrive and we saw lots of
waterfowl immediately--Mallards, Gadwall, Pintail, Canvasback, Redhead,
Scaup, Canada Geese and others-- from that location. Unfortunately, the
"birds" were all decoys set up by three hunters in a blind just a few
feet from the shoreline. The hunters were the source of the authentic
sounding "quacks," too. (There were some real Mallards far out in the
river, but they had the good sense to stay away from the Maryland
hunters and from us. Maybe a Sunday would be a better day to look for
ducks on the Potomac.)
Plan B was initiated and we drove to the Jackson Abbott Wetlands where
we saw:
Canada Geese
Wood Duck 3
Gadwall 10
American Wigeon 2
American Black Duck 1
Mallard 15
Northern Pintail 2
They were all the real thing.
