Greetings to all:
Late this afternoon, I thought that I was at a marsh boarding the Chesapeake
Bay standing knee deep in water with a Black Lab waiting for the ducks to fly
in. And boy did they, at 1630 hrs while at the lower observation tower at
Staunton River Battlefield State Park, large groups of birds started to fly in.
Most of the ducks were Scaup along with Wood Ducks, Mallards and American
Black Ducks.
At times there would be two or three groups flying by with anywhere from 20 to
50 birds in each group. Some times they would fly directly over head and you
could hear the wings whistle.
Along with the ducks, a single Great Blue Heron and a Pied-bill Grebe was seen
as well as an Eastern Phoebe.
Several Red-tailed Hawks were near the park and a Cooper's Hawk was seen.
Ducks total are as follows:
Scaup - 300 est.
Wood Ducks - 15
American Black Duck - 10
Mallards - 10
Merry Christmas to all
