Larry Lynch and Brian Patteson telephoned from the Outer Banks of North
Carolina today to report that a scattering of Dovekie have been found from
Nags Head down to Cape Point (Buxton), North Carolina from the 4th of the
month through today. It sounds as though about 8-10 birds have been
involved, the most cooperative of which was a bird seen perched on the
"groin" (the rock riprap near the southern base of the bridge over Oregon
Inlet) and swimming in the general area. Quite a few VSO folks have now seen
their "lifer" Dovekie, according to Larry. Some of the Dovekie have been
picked up on the local beaches and brought in to Park Service personnel. It
might be worth checking Virginia's beaches (especially Back Bay, where wrecks
have been recorded in the past) for these tiny alcids.
