Hi again VAbirders,
We spotted a juvie E. Towhee in our garden this morning. As far as I've
been able to tell, Towhees don't nest close to us, so I'm assuming this
juvie is a sign that there is some dispersal going on. The seasons pass so
quickly.
An update on our Pileateds in case any are interested...both mom and dad
Pileated are still feeding their begging youngsters, but are also beginning
to push their charges away. They reluctantly feed them and then give them
several pokes and pecks after doing so. They then fly off in a rush as if
they are trying to "shake" the younguns, who follow after, desperately
trying to keep up. Dad Klutzy still seems to be in charge of the 2
daughters and Mom Mrs. P still seems to be in charge of son Junior. If
Klutzy encounters Junior he chases him off and if Mrs. P. encounters either
of the daughters, she chases them off. Klutzy and Mrs. P seem pretty picky
about the division of labor. We've also seen Junior on his own, even using
our suet feeder, so I guess he's getting more independent every day. Yes,
the seasons pass quickly.
