I did some scouting this morning for the upcoming DC CBC. Highlights
included a male Long-tailed Duck near the southern end of National Airport,
which was seen with a spotting scope from the tip of Hains Point. The female
Long-tailed Duck seen and photographed by several of us yesterday closer to
the railroad bridge was not present.  Across the Potomac River at Gravelly
Point Park I saw a Common Loon, two American Kestrels perched on signs and
light posts and in direct and hovering flight over land and water, and what
appears to be a typical adult Northern Red-tailed Hawk (abieticola), which I
managed to photograph. Highlights of a visit to the nearby LBJ Memorial
Grove included a female American Redstart and an Orange-crowned Warbler.
Also encountered at this location were two Ruby-crowned Kinglets, seven
Hooded Mergansers and a heard Winter Wren in the area that I photographed
one several days ago.
