Hello all,
While on a short bird walk at the park area at the end of Riverside Parkway in
Loudoun County, we found a COMMON NIGHTHAWK sleeping on a tree branch. Carol
spotted it as it moved while rearranging itself. From the main parking lot,
walk south on the trail. Just as it bears left towards a bridge that looks out
of place, there is a short grass path that takes you to a wider trail. Turn
left on that and walk a short distance and turn right on a trail that takes you
along an abbreviated edge habitat. Walk about 50 yards. I scuffed an arrow on
the path pointing to the tree.
Overall, we had a nice hour of birding at this area.
Other finds included BLACK VULTURE, ORCHARD ORIOLE--several, including a first
year male and a female on a nest, CEDAR WAXWINGS--at least 10, YELLOW BILLED
CUCKOO, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD--2, KILLDEER, and various
other expected birds such as RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and GRAY
CATBIRDS.
